Background Information on the Canadian Student Survey

Undergraduate students from universities across Canada are invited to participate in an exciting new research project: the Canadian Student Survey. The first project of its kind in Canada, the survey is designed and coordinated by student associations, and strives to engage the entire student body to share their opinions and experiences about post-secondary education. The end goal of this project is to publish national and institutional-level reports that will assist national, provincial and institutional student leaders, stakeholders and policymakers to improve higher education in Canada.

Individual student participation in the research is completely voluntary and your decision to participate or not will not impact your current or future student status. All information collected, used and/or disclosed will be used for research purposes only and administered as per the requirements of your institution's Research Ethics Board.

Participation in this Research is Completely Voluntary.

Whether or not you take part is completely up to you. You may stop participating in the survey at any time, and without penalty. You may decline to answer any questions that you do not wish to answer and you can withdraw your participation at any time by not submitting your responses. There are no known or anticipated risks from participating in this study.

To stop participating, just stop doing the survey, and don't press the “submit” button at the end. This survey is confidential and it is important for you to know that any information that you provide will be confidential. All of the data will be summarized and no individual could be identified from these summarized results.

Participation in this Research is Completely Confidential and Secure.

The Canadian Education Project takes research very seriously and applies the strictest measures to keep your personal information safe and confidential.

The web site is programmed to collect responses alone and will not collect any information that could potentially identify you (such as machine identifiers) or your IP address.

The data, with no personal identifiers, collected from this study will be maintained on a password-protected computer at the Canadian Education Project. After the survey data collection is completed and organized, each participating institution will be given an Excel spreadsheet with the data (with no personal identifiers) for participants from their school. The raw survey data will remain on the CEP server, and will be destroyed after the completion of the project. Aggregate data of all participating schools will be kept for 10 years after completion of the study and then erased by the Canadian Education Project's Privacy Officer. Miriam Kramer of the Canadian Education Project and the Canadian Education Project's Privacy Officer, Ryan Dunn are the only people who will have access to the original data resulting from this research project.

However, if you wish to enter the draw to win one of ten national cash prizes of $100 each, please note that at the end of the survey you will be directed to a draw page where you will be asked to enter your contact details (should you wish to enter the draw). As well, you will be asked at the end of the survey if you wish to participate in any future research. If you wish to do so, you will be asked to write in your email address and phone numbers. In both these cases your contact details will be stored separately from your responses and there will be no way to link them. The contact information will only be used for the purpose of the draw and will be destroyed after the draw is completed.
