Data and Statistics Strategies

While Canada has a world-class system of education, its system of data collection and data dissemination in the field of education has some shortcomings. A significant portion of our past work has investigated the issue of how to improve data collection and analysis.

We have worked with provincial governments to improve the way pan-Canadian data on Aboriginal students is collected and reported at both the K-12 level and in post-secondary sectors. We have also been involved in improving the country’s collective ability to follow students longitudinally from Kindergarten to the completion of post-secondary education through administrative data. We have been examined ways to improve data collection and reporting for purposes of both public policy and consumer choice, in Ontario and for the country as a whole.

CanEd staff have vast knowledge of Statistics Canada data sets including the Youth in Transition Study (YITS). Alex Usher is recognized for his expertise and is the only non-governmental representative on a national task force for data collection. CanEd Director Miriam Kramer sits on the Post-Secondary Education Information System working group, consulting with Stats Can and institutional representatives on developing a national strategy for data collection at the post-secondary education level.
